Are Pet Wellness Plans Worth It?

Here’s What to Know Before You Commit

Many veterinary chains today offer what are called “wellness plans”—prepaid packages of routine vet visits and preventive care. One of the most popular is Banfield’s Optimum Wellness Plan® (OWP), which has been widely marketed as a way to save on your pet’s health expenses.

But is it really a good deal?

At Dunedin Animal Medical Center, we don’t offer wellness plans. We’ve spoken with many pet owners who enrolled in wellness plans only to realize later they didn’t fully understand what was (and wasn’t) included.

Before you commit to any veterinary contract, here are a few important things to consider:

What Most Pet Wellness Plans Do NOT Cover

  • No illness or injury care. Most wellness plans do not cover sick visits, emergency care, or treatment for injuries or chronic conditions. You’ll still pay out-of-pocket for anything unexpected.
  • Limited provider network. Plans like Banfield’s OWP only cover services provided at Banfield hospitals. If you move, travel, or want a second opinion, you’re limited to their system.
  • Annual contracts. These plans are usually billed monthly—but they’re 12-month contracts. Canceling early often requires paying for the full retail cost of any services used.
  • One-size-fits-all approach. The care offered in wellness plans is often standardized. Your pet may receive services they don’t need—or miss out on more personalized care that isn’t part of the package.

DAMC Approaches Wellness Differently

At DAMC, we believe your pet’s wellness care should be:

  • Flexible. No contracts. No monthly obligations. Just the care your pet needs—when they need it.
  • Transparent. We don’t bundle services into packages you may not use. You see exactly what you’re paying for.
  • Tailored. Every pet is different. We recommend wellness services based on breed, age, lifestyle, and medical history—not a corporate checklist.
  • Continuity of care. Our veterinarians build long-term relationships with you and your pet, offering consistent guidance through every stage of life.

When a Wellness Plan Might Make Sense

If you already use Banfield and visit frequently for routine care, a plan could offer some cost savings. Just be sure to:

  • Read the fine print carefully.
  • Understand what services are truly included.
  • Compare the costs of à la carte care at a local clinic like DAMC.
