Lepto Infections in Tampa Bay
At Dunedin Animal Medical Center, we’re committed to keeping our community informed about emerging health risks for pets. Recently, our very own Dr. Delgado has observed cases of a bacterial infection called Leptospirosis in the area, and she’s urging pet owners to stay alert.
“We’ve had reports of a couple of cases in the region recently. Fortunately, with prompt treatment, both dogs made full recoveries,” said Dr. Delgado.

So, what exactly is Leptospirosis? “It’s a bacterial infection that’s commonly found in the environment—particularly in soil and contaminated water sources,” Dr. Delgado explained. The bacteria responsible, Leptospira, often spreads through the urine of infected wildlife such as raccoons, rats, and other animals your pet might encounter outdoors.
Pet owners should be on the lookout for symptoms, which can include fever, shivering, muscle tenderness, reluctance to move, dehydration, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, lethargy, and jaundice (a noticeable yellowing of the skin or eyes). If your pet shows any of these signs, don’t wait—contact your veterinarian right away.
“We’re seeing a troubling rise in Leptospirosis cases affecting dogs in our area,” Dr. Delgado noted. “What’s especially important for pet owners to know is that this is a zoonotic disease. That means it can spread from dogs to humans, putting you and your family at higher risk if your pet becomes infected.”
The close bond we share with our pets can sometimes work against us in these situations. “So many of us let our dogs sleep in our beds or share our living spaces. That proximity makes it surprisingly easy for the bacteria to spread to us,” she added.
Dr. Delgado strongly encourages pet owners to talk to their veterinarian about preventative options, including the Leptospirosis vaccine, which can be a game-changer in protecting your furry friend. If you notice anything unusual in your pet’s behavior or health, early detection and treatment are vital—for your pet’s well-being and your own peace of mind.
