What is coccidia in cats?
Coccidia is a tiny parasite that lives in a cat’s intestines. You cannot see it with your eyes. It often causes diarrhea — especially in kittens.
How do cats get it?
Infected cats pass tiny egg-like forms (called oocysts) in their stool. These can live for a long time in litter boxes, dirt, and on surfaces.
- Licking or sniffing contaminated litter or soil
- Hunting and eating an infected mouse or other prey
- Sharing litter boxes with an infected cat
- Crowded places like shelters or multi-cat homes

Signs to watch for
- Watery diarrhea (sometimes with mucus)
- Blood in the stool in worse cases
- Dehydration
- Less appetite and weight loss
- Vomiting (sometimes)
- A dull, tired kitten
If your kitten has sudden watery or bloody diarrhea, get help — do not wait it out.
Diagnosis & treatment
We look for coccidia with a fecal (stool) test. One negative test does not always mean “no coccidia,” especially if symptoms continue.
Coccidia can be treated. Medicines such as sulfadimethoxine (Albon) or ponazuril are often used. Treatment commonly lasts about 10 to 14 days. Fluids and supportive care help if your cat is dehydrated.
Litter box & home cleanup
- Scoop litter boxes at least once a day (more if several cats)
- Wash boxes with hot water and diluted ammonia when you can — regular bleach often does not kill coccidia
- Wash bedding and toys in hot water; dry on high heat
- Keep sick kittens separate from other cats until your vet says it is safe
