Distemper Outbreak Tragedy Underscores Importance of Pet Vaccination
In a heartbreaking incident that has captured national attention, Calhoun County Animal Control in Alabama was forced to euthanize all remaining dogs in its care due to a devastating outbreak of canine distemper. This decision came after veterinary professionals and public health officials confirmed widespread exposure throughout the shelter, despite initial hopes that the infection was isolated.
“This is a heartbreaking time for our staff, and the decision was not made lightly,” said Naomi Richards of Calhoun County Animal Control. “Our employees are deeply affected, as they care for these animals daily.”
The first confirmed case occurred on June 26, nearly three weeks after a transferred dog tested positive for distemper. Officials believed the situation to be contained—until dogs in the shelter began showing symptoms. By then, the virus had already spread.
Distemper is a highly contagious and often fatal virus that attacks a dog’s respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems. It spreads easily through airborne exposure and contact with infected bodily fluids, making it particularly difficult to control in dense environments like shelters.
Symptoms of distemper include:
- Nasal and eye discharge
- Coughing and fever
- Vomiting and diarrhea
- Lethargy and appetite loss
- Muscle twitching, seizures, or paralysis
- Head tilt, confusion, and lack of coordination
Dogs infected with distemper can remain contagious for weeks, even without obvious symptoms.
